Role Summary:

The Battery Module Design Lead Engineer is responsible for leading the design and integration of the cell module assembly into a family of high-voltage battery packs. She/he is involved with the latest battery technology in General Motors electrified vehicles portfolio for both current and future vehicles. She/he will work with a battery pack team and will be responsible for providing technical direction and coordination of the design and release of a cell module assemblies into their respective high voltage battery packs. The Battery Module Design Lead Engineer will directly affect the quality, durability and performance of future hybrid, plugin and battery electric vehicles manufactured by GM.

This job is based in General Motor’s Warren Technical Center and will work with GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. The lab is a state of the art facility operates 24/7, covers 85,000 square-feet on the Warren Tech Center campus, and has capabilities to test 112 battery packs and 120 battery cells at a time. The General Motors Technical Center has been named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The campus opened in 1956 and houses the GM vehicle engineering center, design center, research and manufacturing engineering. It is the workplace of over 18,000 employees on a 1.1 square-mile campus.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of Battery Module Design Release Engineers to properly design and integrate the Cell Module Assembly into the Battery Pack Assembly (Rechargeable Energy Storage System or RESS)
  • Develop engineering designs and generate technical solutions for current and new programs
  • Organize and operate a Module PDT meeting on a weekly or as needed basis
  • Integrate component designs into the Cell Module Asm, and integrate that into the Battery Pack
  • Manage and respond to Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS) issues for integration, build and test and track issue status
  • Plan and direct component suppliers as required
  • Utilize Unigraphics (UG) skills to design, check designs, check design integration, and run basic analysis as required
  • Utilize Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) skills to make robust and optimized design decisions
  • Support preproduction and production build events as necessary to address and resolve integration issues
  • Communicate Cell Module integration issues to Pack Product Development Team (PDT)
  • Communicate, coordinate and consult with engineering departments and stakeholders
  • Support status meetings per Engineering Group Manager (EGM), Global Lead Engineer (GLE), Project Lead Engineer (PLE) direction
  • Support Program Management per EGM/GLE direction
  • Support Plan for Every Part Reviews (PFEP) as required
  • Support Design Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (DFMEAs)
  • Support Battery Pack Peer-Reviews

Required Skills and Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • 7+ Years’ experience with parts design and release
  • Experience with design and integration of structural components
  • Proficient computer skills including analyzing data, creating presentations
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of automotive energy storage systems
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex
  • Time management skills to meet agreed upon customer deliverables, able to manage multiple projects
  • Interpersonal styles and communication skills to work effectively with local and international team members
  • Technical writing ability to create written engineering evaluation reports
  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX
  • Experience with structural analysis

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering
  • High voltage or electrified vehicle safety training and hands on work experience
  • 10+ Years’ experience with a major automotive OEM
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
