Job Description

Reporting to the Plant Manager and/or Buyer Supervisor, this position plans, controls and distributes materials and productions to meet company objectives and customer requirements. Supervises personnel in Shipping, Receiving and the Subcage.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for the Materials Department and participate in attainment of Plant goals.

  • Develop material procedures and systems that support the Plant Operations.

  • Oversees and ensures proper production control planning and scheduling programs including Kanban to meet customer requirements and to balance the level of manpower and machine requirements. Makes certain that deviations to the production schedule or Kanban are investigated and properly followed up. Arranges in plant transfers of materials to meet production schedules.

  • Ensures proper contact with customers relating to releases and deliveries.

  • Requisition materials and establishes and sequential delivery dates to departments, according to job order priorities and material availability. Confers with requesting parties when specific sources are requested. Investigates and solve problems resulting from material shortages.

  • Develops, establishes, and provides for the maintenance of reporting systems that related to the Materials function. Compiles and maintains inventory, in-process production reports, and status and location of materials.

  • Responsible for the motivation and development of subordinates to optimize their performance and their personal and professional growth.

  • Monitor inventory levels and inventory control parameters (raw materials, WIP, finished goods) to meet the needs of changing business conditions.

  • Monitor internal delivery schedule to minimize freight dollars.

  • Serve as materials representative in production launch meetings.

  • Drive the Materials Department BOS measurable towards “Best in Class”.

  • Contribute to overall corporate strategies and operations by participation in interplant and corporate activities, i.e., Best Methods Teams, Materials Quarterly Meetings.

  • Monitors/promotes environmental, health, safety, and housekeeping within area of responsibility.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience


  • Bachelors Degree in related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 3 to 5 years of inventory management experience

  • Supervisory experience

  • 5 years of manufacturing experience


  • Materials Planning supervisory experience

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in SAP and ability to train others in system preferred

  • Strong computer, analytical, problem solving, and communication skills

  • APICS Certification preferred

  • In-depth working knowledge of MRP

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals and financial reports

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, and members of the business community

  • Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical reference

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram from and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
