We are currently seeking an experienced and goal-oriented Associate Prototype Development Technician to play a vital role as part of our research and development teams.
What you will do:
In this position, you will ensure the on-time and on-budget delivery of assigned projects, while exemplifying our core values of Integrity, Accountability, People, and Performance. This role is with our Medical R&D group, focusing on generating revolutionary technologies that we believe will significantly impact the quality and cost of patient care. You will work with R&D Engineers to develop and construct working prototypes of new Stryker products using various tools & dies, fab machinery, welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Works with Engineers and Designers to creates product prototypes and test fixtures from sketches and blueprints.
Fabricates products and/or parts on an independent basis.
Works with Engineers and Designers to optimize blueprints and designs, ensuring the manufacturability and cost effectiveness of new products.
Provides technical assistance to manufacturing personnel during pilot runs and production ramp up.
Performs maintenance on all equipment in the prototype laboratory.
Accountable for all record keeping in accordance with Stryker specifications, as required.
Provide technical assistance to project teams with prototyping workload and schedule management in order to meet time constraints and delivery schedules.
Assist with test fixture builds.
Learn the design process, attend design reviews, and offer improvements for component and system level designs based on cost savings, manufacturability, material constraints, form, fit, and function.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
What you need:
Requires basic proficiency with tools & dies, fab machinery (lathe, mill, brake, etc.), and welding. Must work toward gaining Team Welding Certification.
Requires a minimum of (1) years prior work experience as a machinist and CNC programmer or related discipline with above average ratings.
Knowledge and Basic Skills:
Basic: Ability to understand and apply information represented on blueprints. Must have a mechanical aptitude, be a problem solver, able to work in a team environment, with reading, writing, math, listening, interpersonal, and auditing skills as well as an understanding of telephone and communication protocol. Must be able to perform basic time, task & schedule management tasks. Computer literacy with knowledge of Windows applications including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access is a plus. Must have skills in documentation, team concepts, preventative maintenance, workplace organization, and any other on-the-job related skills. Must gain a basic understanding in metrology, metallurgy, pneumatics, hydraulics, molding, casting, modeling, rapid prototyping techniques, and stamping.
Functional skills: Ability to maintain, set-up, and run all R&D manual lathes, mills, drill presses, shears, presses, saws and welders. Ability to maintain, program, set-up and operate R&D CNC machines preferred. Limited ability to program and run production machines to include but not limited to the Amada Laser, Amada Turret Punch, and CNC Tube Bender. Familiarity with AP100, MasterCam or Pro-Engineer in order to manipulate and create .dxf files and 2D drawings. Demonstrate inventive and innovative thinking while actively applying this ability to product development. A developing ability to advise engineers & designers on and make recommendations regarding proper tooling & techniques as well as the use of appropriate components and materials to meet product specifications. Ability to use a logical step by step approach/procedure to meet job requirements. Must be able to work independently (when required) or on a team to diagnose/resolve problems during the design and prototyping process.
Stryker specific skills preferred – knowledge of Stryker manufacturing processes. Commitment and adherence to quality standards, complying with product and design specifications, as well as the ability to participate in the 1st article process. Maintain a product, customer, and industry knowledge. Required to implement and comply with good housekeeping and ergonomic practices and procedures in accordance with Stryker 5S and Kanban. Develop a working aptitude of Master Control, J D Edwards, and A/S 400. Compliance and active participation in safety programs.
May involve prolonged periods of stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, sitting, standing, and/or crawling as appropriate.
May be required to move equipment up to 50 pounds, reach, push, or pull in order to accomplish job accountabilities.
Coordination of eye, hand, and/or foot movement with an ability to grasp by hand and meet cognitive demands to include visual and auditory discrimination/memory, reading ability, and memory retention ability.
Requires use of safety glasses, hearing protection, and closed-toe safety shoes.
