Citizens Bank Senior Staff Accountant in Johnston, Rhode Island


The Senior Staff Accountant plays a critical role in the Consumer Controllers Financial Accounting and Reporting area of Citizens Bank, N.A. Consumer Controller Group handles accounting specific treatment, reconciliation and financial/regulatory reporting for consumer mortgages, equity lines/loans, automobile loans, student loans and credit cards serviced both internally and externally. The Senior Staff Accountant provides internal accounting control oversight for financial and regulatory reporting, pledging of assets and quality controls. Consumer Controller’s will depend on you to make certain all Quarterly, Monthly and Weekly Reporting is prepared, approved and submitted in a timely and accurate manner while remaining consistent with accounting policies and regulations. The incumbent will possess thorough understanding of the financial/regulatory reporting requirements, contributing this knowledge to the continuous improvement of processes related to data gathering, integrity and report generation.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collect, review and analyze highly complex data and/or documentation to ensure achievements with the Consumer Controller Group’s business plan financial objectives, key performance metrics, policies, procedures and/or regulatory and risk requirements.

  • Oversee complex or unusual transactions and propose corrections when necessary.

  • Partner with Financial Reporting Lead to ensure adherence to Corporate Accounting policy standards, Call Reporting, SEC and Investor Relations reporting requirements.

  • Prepare the Quarterly, Monthly and Weekly Reporting submission schedules and ensure all material adjustments are recorded properly.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of reporting requirements and apply said knowledge to minimize risk exposure. Apply said knowledge to the identification of opportunities to gain efficiency through process improvements.

  • Help Financial Reporting lead with any audit activity from the regulators that oversee our business.

  • Manage, influence and train junior team members and serve as the secondary contact for all initiatives that impact financial reporting.

  • Serve as subject matter expert and serve as a business unit liaison with other departments. Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrate with others; is aware of the competition and the factors that differentiate the company in the market.

  • Manage projects requiring coordination with other teams, process improvement projects and may assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and training materials to maximize efficiency

  • Help in the preparation of consumer assets pledged to the FRB & FHLB and be a back up to the Staff Accountant. Also, perform internal control reviews to the FRB & FHLB process.

  • Ensure completeness and accuracy in the Consumer Financial Reporting process and perform internal control reviews. The incumbent monitors activities and ensures that the team has proper controls in place.

  • Perform other such duties as assigned including trouble shooting operational issues.


  • 5 plus years of experience in an accounting related position

  • Understanding of accounting principles (GAAP, FFIEC, FASB)

  • An excellent understanding of Call and management reporting

  • An understanding of pledging assets to the FRB and the FHLB

  • Demonstrated analytical skills and attention to detail

  • A highly organized individual with experience performing in deadline driven environments

  • Excellent time management

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to build repeatable processes that are streamlined, automated, and macro driven

  • Advanced writing and verbal communication

  • Proficiency using MS Office

  • Proven ability to influence; an agent of change

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in Finance or Accounting highly desired; Master’s Degree preferred

  • 5+ years in roles of increasing responsibility and demonstrated experience preparing, reviewing and filing Financial, Regulatory, Management and Call reporting for a large regional banking institution in lieu of degree.

Hours per Week: 40

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
