Job Description

Tenneco is seeking a Paralegal for the Intellectual Property group within our Global Law Department, with significant emphasis supporting the company’s global patent function. The Paralegal will have an integral role in the administration and management of the global patent portfolio. The role will require a positive attitude, teamwork, and strong project management skills to be able to move and track multiple projects to completion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Chief IP Counsel and other IP attorneys and patent agents to develop, implement, and maintain docketing processes, procedures and policies for invention disclosures, patents, and patent applications, including daily or periodic clearance of workflow.

  • Coordinate and report communications with the USPTO and foreign patent agencies.

  • Prepare and file appropriate documentation for patent applications.

  • Coordinate electronic filings of patent applications and communications with the USPTO.

  • Assist in tracking and maintaining IP and Legal Department budget; including management of IP expenses in Legal Tracker (formerly Serengeti).

  • Interface with inventors to capture new innovations for review.

  • Interact with U.S. and international counsel.

  • Assist in administration of inventor awards program.

  • Work with and assist other departments to ensure understanding and expectations for patent policies and rules, including fielding questions from employees.

  • Review new patent grants for errors and corrections.

  • Maintain docketing system for invention disclosures, patent applications, patents, and trademarks.

  • Extract data from patent database and prepare reports to help businesses understand the content and value of their IP assets.

  • Support various litigation matters, including docketing deadlines and assisting with document collection and production.

  • Perform legal research utilizing online databases and perform other research projects.

  • Assist with legalization of international documents for use in international legal proceedings and other routine corporate filings.

  • Assist with maintaining various corporate databases.

Required Experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with a Paralegal certificate is preferred.

  • Ten years of experience providing a thorough understanding of domestic and international patent prosecution practice to achieve business objectives.

  • Experience working with extensive patent portfolios and docketing systems.

  • Experience with IP research tools.

  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Exceptional customer service and organization skills.

  • Organized, independent, detailed oriented, and enthusiastic, with a demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, on multiple tasks, and to meet deadlines.

  • Experienced with the USPTO’s Electronic Filing System (EFS).

  • Familiarity with patent law and practice, including the MPEP, Code of Federal Regulations, is preferred.

  • Excellent Microsoft Word, Excel(, PowerPoint and Outlook skills.

  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information.

  • Ability to maintain high standards of customer service and satisfaction.

  • High integrity and ethics in all dealings.
