Job Description

This Manufacturing Engineering position will support machining operations within the ZF facility located in Fowlerville, Michigan. This position will be responsible for supporting the launch of our state-of-the-art, enclosed anodizing operation, automated inspection gage, CNC machining centers along with assisting in other machining production areas. This role will lead a cross-functional team of maintenance technicians across a three-shift operation. This position will be primarily responsible for the following but not limited to:

  • Support the CNC/Automation/Anodizing processes for an operation preparing for the high visibility launch of a new product.

  • Conceive, develop, and implement new machining processes to improve efficiencies, increase productivity and improve quality and machine utilization opportunities.

  • Identify, create and support project documentation including, but not limited to HMI, PLC programming, power distribution, control/signal wiring, wireless technology, cabinet/panel design, BOM and layout drawings.

  • Improve first pass capability.

  • Maintain cost system, forecasts and budgets.

  • Participate with and support engineering and manufacturing teams with technical expertise needed to resolve issues impacting our ability to provide a top-quality product in the most cost-effective manner.

  • Help launch new products and supervise installation of new tooling.

  • Monitors scrap and controllable spending in area of responsibility.

  • Implements cost reduction ideas.

  • Performs process failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).

  • Performs capability analysis and R&R studies on existing and new equipment.

  • Assists in installation and moves of new and existing machinery. Provides layouts for equipment as necessary.

  • Support machine runoffs (which may require travel).

  • Communication with internal and/or external customers.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required (minimum).

Experience and Skill Requirements

Minimum 6 - 8 years experience in a fast paced manufacturing environment with the ability to work within a cross functional group. Basic computer experience and experience with software applications including: word processing, databases, presentations and spreadsheets. Basic report writing skills. Good communication and documentation skills. Strong interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and decision making skills. Excellent leadership skills. Ability to work in a multi-task environment.

Basic knowledge of lean manufacturing processes and a high level of mechanical aptitude with a desire to work in a hands-on manufacturing environment. Must have PLC and HMI programming experience. Allen Bradley controls experience peferred. Knowledge of product, tooling, test methods and CNC machining/grinding is a plus. Knowledge of fluid mechanics and hydraulics. Knowledge of CAD software is a plus. Six Sigma Green Belt status preferred.

Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time. Physical strength and agility. Flexibility with job responsibilities and the ability to work overtime as required. Some travel may be necessary.
