This Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Manager position will provide leadership, management and oversight for all EHS systems, processes and activities at our Fenton and Fowlerville MI, manufacturing facilities.


  • Manage the development and integration of incident reduction and safety performance improvement activities, including but not limited to the following: ergonomics; behavior based safety; machine guarding; LOTO; EHS training and awareness; auditing; employee involvement; and a defined safety leadership process to achieve the ZF Safety Excellence philosophy.

  • Evaluate, recommend and implement policies and procedures to assure awareness and compliance with all EHS requirements of ZF and regulatory agencies.

  • Implement environmental, health and safety initiatives and activities as assigned by the Regional EHS Manager.

  • Manage and lead site efforts with implementing and integrating the ZF EHS Management System requirements.

  • Remain up-to-date and informed about all existing and proposed changes to environmental, health, and safety compliance (local, state/provincial and national) regulations and requirements that are applicable at the site, and maintain compliance related plans, procedures and documents.

  • Submit all applicable EHS reports to ZF Corporate, regulatory agencies, etc.

  • Support the Organization and Management Team in formulation and achievement of its EHS objectives and targets and advise on policy and regulatory matters.

  • Ensure work processes analyses that identify potential hazards and application of appropriate controls (including equipment EHS reviews, site physical reviews and work methods/practices reviews).

  • Manage the assessment and periodic re-assessment of potential risks/hazards.

  • Manage, develops and provide or direct applicable EHS training for site employees, supervisors, and the management team.

  • Develop and administer plant wide emergency response procedures.

  • Serve as the sites’ primary interface with external EHS regulators in the event of site inspections, reviews or operational inquiries.

  • Ability to work hands-on and independently and to champion successful EHS initiatives.

  • Capable of completing special assignments to work with Global EHS Team in support of ZF EHS program.

  • Establish and oversee safety programs/processes and committees in ergonomics, accident investigation, emergency preparedness and response, and health and safety.

  • Supervise and mentor a Environmental Health and Safety Supervisor who will assist in the support of both plants.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelors of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering and/or Safety Engineering and Management or closely related science/engineering field is required. Advance Degree or EHS related Professional Certification (CHMM, CIH or CSP) preferred, but not required.

Ten plus (10+) years’ experience in manufacturing environment with emphasis on environmental and safety management.

Experience and Skill Requirements

Familiarity with ISO14001 and ISO 45001 (or OHSAS 18001).

Lead auditor status is preferred but not required.

Broad range of knowledge and experience with EHS regulations.

Thorough working knowledge and understanding of EHS compliance (local, state/provincial and national) regulations that are applicable to the facility. Ability to research, interpret and apply EHS regulations to site operations.

Must be capable of managing and leading all EHS functional activities.

Thorough knowledge in relation to develop processes and practices related to the following key areas: HSE Management System implementation; Waste Profiling and Disposal, Behavior Based Safety; Ergonomics; Risk Assessment and Reduction; Industrial Hygiene; Accident/incident investigation; and core Safety.

NPDES, Stormwater, and Non-Community Drinking Water Certifications are preferred. Non-certified/licensed applicants must be able to attain relevant certifications.

Use and maintain various computer databases as applicable. Be computer literate in use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Strong analytical, problem solving, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Able to speak and write clearly and succinctly to communicate complex issues.

Able to work with diverse groups and be comfortable speaking publicly.

Ensure that EHS data is entered into the TRW database per prescribed time frames and create monthly EHS activity reports as defined.

Ability to successfully manage multiple priorities.

This position may require periodic evening and weekend work; work schedules are flexible to support internal customers and non-standard events.

This position may require periodic domestic and/or international travel. Travel time is expected to be less than 10% annually.
